April Pocalujka, Ph.D-ABD, MA, LPC, CAADC, QIDP

Therapist, LLPC Supervisor

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Advanced Addiction & Drug Counselor who is certified through the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals. I am also a Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional. Currently, I am working on my doctorate degree in Counselor Education & Supervision.

In my 16 years of counseling experience, I have worked with individuals, couples, families, and groups in various settings such as private practice, community mental health, schools, hospitals, and home-based environments. In addition to practice, I have extensive experience as an educator, supervisor, and mentor. As a gatekeeper to the counseling profession and an advocate of professional development, it is imperative to keep up with current research and trends that foster multicultural competency.

My hobbies and interests include travel, theater, fashion, gardening, and spending time with friends, family, and our animals. Finally, I enjoy anything that involves innovation and creativity. I received my master's degree in counseling from Spring Arbor University in 2008. My research areas are in personality development using a humanistic & existential lens. My dissertation focuses on gifted, talented, and creative adults' career, occupational, and social issues using Dabrowski’s theory of Positive Disintegration.

My Approach

My current practice focuses on various concerns that inhibit self-actualization, balance, and harmony, which are needed to flow through life. I work with clients aged 16+ of all backgrounds who are dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, and life transitions. Additionally, I work with neurodivergent and gifted clients who have problems related to their social, occupational, and educational environment.

My person-centered approach is to help clients seek clarity, direction, and purpose in their lives by helping them to have a better understanding of themselves. I use a holistic and integrative approach, combining evidence-based techniques with creative tools. I believe that creativity helps us solve problems. Through creativity, we can tap into our own energy and power to heal ourselves from within, allowing transformation to take place.
